How to Stay Fit on Vacation: Destin Florida

Taking your family on a vacation is a fun break from regular life, but many of us still want to stick to our fitness routine, even while at the beach.  Whether you’re looking to stick to your normal routine or switch it up for something new, check out our ideas of how to stay fit on vacation below.

Free Fitness Classes

If fitness classes are your go-to, check out the schedule for the free morning fitness classes, sponsored by The Market Shops in Sandestin.  For the entire summer, they’re offering a free class every weekday morning at 9 am, including some of your favorites like Pure Barre, Pilates, Tabata, and Core Stretch.  The classes are free to attend and take place on the lawn by the Gazebo.  All you need is a towel or yoga mat to fit right in!

Paddleboarding

Vacation is a perfect time to get outside the box and try something new for your workouts.  Being so close to the water, there are a variety of places you can rent a paddleboard from – our favorite being the Yolo Board rental shop on the Baytowne Marina in Sandestin.  Paddleboarding can burn between 300-400 calories per hour, which makes it a fun alternative to your standard cardio. If you need lessons, or want to join a group paddleboard class, check out more info here.

Walk/Run The Beach

Another option is to amp up your cardio by taking your workout to the beach.  Walking or running on the beach can burn up to 1.5 times more calories than running on standard concrete and is better overall for toning your legs.  There are many public beach accesses available during your stay, and it’s best to get out early in the morning before the beaches fill with other vacationers.

Tennis

If you prefer to stay active playing sports, the Sandestin Tennis Club is a great option.  Guests of Sandestin have access to the 12 on-site tennis courts and other amenities such as private lessons, single hitting sessions, group clinics, equipment rental, and children’s tennis activities.  The courts are open daily, but reservations are required.

Local Gyms

Many of our local gyms offer day or week passes if you prefer to stick to your normal routine.  Nearby gyms include Golds Gym or the Sandestin Fitness Center, both in Miramar Beach and contain cardio machines, free weights, and daily fitness classes.

Bike riding:

Another way to keep in shape and have a little fun is to ride a bike! According to Harvard University biking at a moderate speed of 12 mph can burn almost 300 calories in 30 minutes. There are a lot of places around Destin and Miramar Beach where you can rent a bike either by the hour or by the day like coastal cruisers or WetDestin. Our recommendation would be to rent it for your stay and rent from a company like La Dolce Vita that will bring the bike to your rental before you get there and pick it up after your stay. There are many bike trails in the area where you can explore the best the Emerald Coast has to offer.

Regardless of your fitness level, there is something for everyone in our Destin and Miramar Beach area. We hope you’ll try out something new while you’re here with us, to keep up with your fitness goals!
